Laid-off California Workers Won’t be First in Line to Rehire:

On September 30, California Governor Gavin Newsom rejected measure A.B. 3216.  The measure would have required employers to rehire those employees who were laid-off during the pandemic first, as new positions become available.

However, the measure has already been implemented in several major cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose.

The Governor stated the measure, if passed, would have created confusion for employers as it required them to rehire employees who were laid off because of a public health directive, government shutdown order, lack of business, a reduction in force, or other economic reason.
